Yeah, got djent? Do you even know what the fuck djent is? Well, read on and find out.
I didn’t know what djent was until about a week ago. And I found out from my friend. He plays drums in a djent band, and he didn’t even know that until about two weeks ago.
So, to quote my good reliable source Wikipedia, djent is “an onomatopoeia for a heavily palm-muted, distorted guitar chord.” You know, dj-dj-dj-djent-dj-djent sound. The name itself is believed to come from Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendahl, and the band is generally known to be as the founders of djent. But where exasctly does that put it as a genre? Isn’t math metal a better description? Or extreme underground experimental heavy jazz metal avant-garde? In fact, odd time signatures are probably more related to those bands than the guitar effect sound itself. Well, much as any genre, there are no clear definitions, so maybe “style” would be a more fitting term than genre. But it does have a ring to it. Djenty-djent-djent.
Anywho, the bands associated with djent include Meshuggah, Periphery, Vildhjarta, SikTh and many more.
If you’re interested more, I suggest checking out got-djent.com, and my friend who introduced me to the genre in detail, Bane “Djent Guru” also gave me his list of top 5 djent songs.
