Tuesday Trivia: Napalm Death are educational

This is just too weird not to get a mention on this website. Apparently, there is a clip on YouTube of Napalm Death appearing on a musical/educational TV program.

What’s the big deal about that? Well, make the jump and find out.

First of all, it’s a kids TV program, and what’s more interesting, it’s a kids TV program hosted by Craig Charles. Craig who? Well, if the name doesn’t ring a bell to you, you should google Red Dwarf (which is one of my all time favorite British comedy series).

What’s “bizarre” about the clip is that Napalm Death appear and perform  two songs, after an intro of classical music and general “safe for kids” stuff, (one of the songs is “You Suffer,” which I’ve covered for my second ever Tuesday Trivia) and talk about metal and grindcore, without it appearing neither cheesy or desperate. Remember this was shot in 1989, when grindcore was practically in diapers, just like some of the kids who’ve watched this show.

The second song they play is “From Enslavement to Obliteration” (title track of their second album), and this is also interesting because the vocalist at that time was Lee Dorrian, and this album in general is among the more brutal sounding Napalm records, because of his specific (and anything but kids friendly) “singing” style.

The second clip is also pretty funny, because it features a ridiculous mashup of pop and what not (Napalm appear near the end). All in all, kudos to BBC and the people behind “What’s That Noise?” for trying (and achieving) to find a pretty decent way to explore metal, without it appearing as a witch hunt, nor being  condescending.
