Metal Kino: True Norwegian Black Metal
The early Black Metal scene and its actions pretty much defined the most obscure movement within the Metal genre. It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with their motives to burn down over 50 churches between 1992 and 1996, these musicians — and in some cases free riders and “fans” — crossed a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Countless innocent people could have been hurt and/or killed during these acts.
With that out of the way, I do have to admit that I understand their motives and I have a weird, maybe a bit morbid, interest in these kind of stories. Like with GG Allin or Niklas Kvarforth, I find myself attracted to these stories.
Even before I started getting into Black Metal musically, I was extremely interested in stories about Black Metal. Stories that had nothing to do with the musical side of the genre. Stories about church burnings, self-mutilation, torture etc.
Stories like the ones told in True Norwegian Black Metal, a documentary that mostly centers around former Gorgoroth vocalist Gaahl. You can see the most popular, and often ridiculed, piece of an interview with Gaahl, taken from that film, above. Surely, I’m using it to lighten up the mood a little bit, especially considering the documentary is rather dark in itself.
But don’t misunderstand me, I’ve watched TNBM (a couple of times) with an open mind and so should you if you’re interested in Black Metal or just obscure stories about a couple of weird people. Make the jump to watch the 5-part documentary now.
Anthrax – Always fighting
In December of 2007, it was announced that Dan Nelson, former vocalist of Devilsize and Inside Hollow, would be the new singer for Anthrax, after the departure of Joey Belladonna and John Bush respectively.
Nelsonthrax started writing the follow-up to We’ve Come For You All — which was ironically called a comeback album — in 2008.
Worship Music is not only the first Anthrax album since 2003, it’s an album that was written three years ago with Dan Nelson (who also wrote a bunch of the music) on vocals and was then completely re-recorded with Joey Belladonna.
Make the jump to read me ranting about one of my favorite bands, their upcoming album Worship Music and their recent online release ‘Fight ‘Em ‘Til You Can’t.’
Video of the Week: Anthrax
‘Only’ is probably the most popular song of John Bush era Anthrax. Metallica’s James Hetfield called ‘Only’ the perfect song and I can’t say I disagree.
‘Only’ was the lead single of Anthrax’s 6th studio album Sound Of White Noise, the first album with John Bush as their vocalist after Joey Belladonna was fired in 1992.
The song is a crowd favorite up to this very day, with Joey Belladonna performing the song for the first time with the band in 2010 as part of the Big Four “tour.”
Scott got a little Ian
We’re a bit late on this, because Scott Ian’s music just interests us a bit more than his private life, but we at Dose of Metal want to take this moment to congratulate Scott Ian and his wife Pearl Aday because on June 19, at 10:19 am, the couple welcomed their first child, Revel Young Ian.
In a couple of tweets, Ian posted:
“Happiest day of my life.”
“Thank you all for the kind words. Life was good and it just got a whole lot better. Cheers.”
Now, just imagine growing up with your daddy being Scott Ian and your grandpa being Meat Loaf, Pearl’s father. If this kid doesn’t grow up to be a kickass musician, I’m disappointed.
Tuesday Trivia: Smelling Fear in the Teen Factory
Now, if the headline above isn’t just the greatest headline of all time, then I might just have to lay off the weed. And, depends on if you’re stoned yourself or not, you might have already figured out what, or rather whom, this article is about. But, just in case, I’ll break it down for you.
‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ + Fear Factory + weed = Smelling Fear in the Teen Factory
Worked for me.
But anyhow, now you know whom this article is about. Are you wondering just what the two (the Nirvana song and Fear Factory) have to do with each other? Well, make the jump to find out.
