Friday Top 10: Greatest Metallica solos
Last week, for the first time ever, we missed the chance to write a Top 10 because we were lazy busy. Instead of publishing a ‘Friday Top 10’ on a Saturday, we’ve decided to simply work on a bigger Top 10 for ‘next Friday’ — which is this Friday cause this happened last week. Confused? So am I.
Anyway, this is more than just a Top 10. I will also talk about 5 runner-ups and will make it a Top 15.
Now, let’s get back to business. I talk a lot about how James is THE guitarist of Metallica, and people give Kirk a lot of shit for his playing. But truth to be told, Kirk wrote some of the best metal solos of all time. His 80s lead work is legendary and has probably influenced countless lead guitarists.
You can get the most technically proficient lead guitarist in Metallica, it won’t guarantee better songs. Kirk’s soloing just gels with James’ riffs, in my opinion, and this Top 10 will take a look at some of his best work.
Arranging the solos by ‘quality’ is very hard. You tend to ‘root’ for your favorite songs. So I tried to be as objective as I could and simply judge the solo itself, regardless of how much I like the rest of the song.
Disclaimer: This article will not talk about speed, length or other technical aspects. It is simply about what I think are Metallica‘s greatest solos, judged on how good they sound on their own and how well they fit the song itself. So all you guitar dorks out there, watch out.
Now that we got out of the way, we can carry on with the top itself. Make the jump.
Friday Top 10: Best Iron Maiden songs
Iron Maiden are, without question, the greatest metal band of all time. Yes, I said it. If you don’t share my opinion, you fail as a metal fan and I hate you then it’s perfectly fine. The originators of the genre, Black Sabbath, surely would have something to say about this title. You can also throw in Judas Priest and Metallica into the mix, as well.
I’ll be honest and admit composing a top 10 Iron Maiden list was quite a challenge. But after countless nights of no sleep and ridiculous pressure and physical abuse from the Dose of Metal crew (to deliver the absolute best 10 Iron Maiden tracks), I actually succeeding coming up with a legit list.
So, what are you waiting for? Make the jump to view the 10 greatest Iron Maiden songs!
Friday Top 10: Best Death Metal songs
People always ask me “Hey, you awesome metal journalist you, what are the best songs of <insert genre>,” so I figured I’d write a list about the greatest Death Metal songs of all time.
There are just a couple of rules I’m limiting myself to. #1 Only one song per band, #2 Must be Death Metal; not Melodic Death, Deathgrind or Blackened Death.
Sounds simple? Well, it is, isn’t it? So make the jump now for this week’s Friday Top 10.
Friday Top 10: Albums of the 90s
So, many of us here at Dose of Metal are in our mid twenties, and we grew up with Metal in the ’90s. It may not go down as the greatest decade in Metal history, but fuck it, I love the ’90s. So many damn good albums came out of that decade, and that’s the purpose of this week’s Friday Top 10.
The list is pretty simple. Two rules: Only one album per band, to keep it varied, and secondly, Metal only, and that’s it. Other than that, I just blew this list out of my ass, because I’m awesome and you should listen to me.
So what are you waiting for? Make the jump for this week’s Friday Top 10.
Friday Top 10: Most Influential Metal Bands
Remember when I posted my wacky comments on Kerrang! magazine’s Top 10 of the most influential rock bands of the last 30 years? Well, it’s time to post the metal equivalent of that Top 10, only we’re not limiting ourselves to time, so it’s the most influential bands of metal history.
Also, only metal bands can make the list. Not bands that aren’t metal themselves but influenced a wide array of metal bands, so exclude AC/DC, Deep Purple etc.
Now, make the jump to see if my list is better than Kerrang’s list.
It is.
