Back when they were still good

Remember this little gem? The post that was mostly used as filler a well written, informative article to bitch about point out the bands that were once good, but the quality of their output has since subsided.

I decided to resurrect it for no other reason than I feel like it. Will I keep it up? I have no idea.

This week, it’s that small underground Metal act, Slipknot. You may have heard of them. The music on their last album sucked. Their music from long ago, however, did not. In fact, it kicked ass. Listen below to one of my favorite tracks by the ‘knot.

Wake up, fuckers

It’s Saturday morning (at least it is in my part of the world), and I’m hoping you’re ready to tell that hangover to fuck off, and blast some modern heavy fucking metal.

This morning I was introduced to a band called Whitechapel. I had heard the name before, probably even heard some of the music, but for some reason I never bothered to really sit down and actually listen to the music, properly. So, I browsed over to Wikipedia and found my answer as to why I never checked the band out – apparently the band are categorized as ‘deathcore’, a genre I’ve just never been able to get into.

I don’t know if the song below is an anomaly, but it sure as hell doesn’t sound too much like deathcore to me. ‘Reprogrammed to Hate’ features Chino Moreno of Deftones fame, and is taken from 2010’s A New Age of Corruption.

Live Dose of Metal: Iron Maiden

What you see above, is the single reason why I can no longer listen to the studio version of the Iron Maiden classic, ‘Fear of the Dark’.

Rock in Rio by Maiden is one of the greatest live Metal albums of all time, recorded at the Rio festival in 2001. It kicks ass, and the rendition of ‘Fear of the Dark’ is the closest thing to perfection you will ever witness. So click play now, kick back and tell me you won’t be singing along to every single word.

I <3 Machine Head

Today when I was in town I blew my load. No, I didn’t see a Justin Bieber poster (he is legal right?). I blew my load on Machine Head‘s special edition of 2007’s The Blackening. I’m not entirely sure why, after all, I have had the standard album since the day of release, but fuck it, I bought it anyway.

The special edition comes with a bonus disc full of B-sides and demos that span Machine Head‘s entire career, as well as a live DVD.

The most powerful part of the DVD can be viewed above. Grab a beer and witness one of the Head‘s best performances. Try not to blow your load otherwise you’ll have messy pants to change.

Little Drummer Boy

So, before I get into this rant, I want to let you know that I don’t know much about drumming from a technical perspective. I don’t play drums, either. I’m just a regular music listener who enjoys some good — sometimes fast, sometimes heavy — drumming. I’m not one of those guys who searches on YouTube for guitar covers of my favorite songs, I search for drum covers of those songs. I just enjoy watching and listening to drummers.

Especially within the last decade, or so, drumming within Heavy Metal and its sub-genres became more of a focal point than ever before. I’m sure Thrash Metal drummers, i.e. Charlie Benante and Dave Lombardo, had a lot to do with that which then further evolved in the Death Metal genre.

So, I just thought why not take a minute and share some of my favorite drum covers or drums-only videos with my devoted DoM audience. After the jump you will find videos of Gene Hoglan and covers of songs originally played by Dave Lombardo, Joey Jordison, and Nyan Cat.
