Start your week with…
… a fucking SHITSTORM!
This week’s album of choice for me, is Strapping Young Lad‘s 2005 album Alien. If you want to start your week with a bang, there’s no better way than waking up to the sound of ‘Shitstorm.’ You can listen to the song below, but due to how shitty Youtube’s audio quality is, and especially with how thick and brutal the track is, I highly suggest you buy the album if you haven’t done so already.
Lady Gaga “gets” metal
When it comes to Lady Gaga, we’re divided over here at Dose of Metal camp. Some of us don’t like her, while some of us don’t like her and want to see her mouth sewn shut. I’m in the second group. If you don’t recall, lately she’s been blabbing about Iron Maiden whenever she gets the chance, and I don’t mind that. But today, I stumbled upon an article on Metal Hammer’s website, where the editor praises her for “getting” metal. She goes on about being in a box at their concert, and suddenly deciding to think outside of the box (excuse the lame pun) and getting into the crowd. To quote:
“We were dancing and singing and everyone was just so into it,” Gaga continues. “And it was one of the first times I’ve been able to just be at a rock concert in a long time. People did recognize me, but it was so kind and warm and awesome. I mean, Iron Maiden is all about, ‘We don’t care who our fans are. We love everybody.’ ”
“And not only that, but when we got into the crowd, there was no pretension. I’m a pop singer — I didn’t know what it would be like in a crowd of a Maiden fans; everybody was hugging me, high-fiving, fistpumps in the air… ‘Oh, it’s so cool you’re at Maiden.’ Jumping and dancing…I mean, it was like absolute no judgment, no prejudice, freedom and love for music. It doesn’t matter who you are; you don’t need to know anything about music to love it. And it was just so… It was just awesome… Maiden changed my life.”
Okay… Why was this so shocking to her? What did she expect, that people would beat her to death? If it came down to that, metalheads would long be extinct because of all the (verbal) fighting that goes inside those circles (well, mostly verbal). Except that, if you are actually normal, you leave the basement virgin type arguments at home, on this site, or wherever the hell you spend your time when you’re not masturbating, while you listen to whatever the hell you want to listen to. In my 25 years of life, I’ve yet to find a metalhead that didn’t enjoy at least some other music besides it. If you happen to know somebody that actually fits that description, feel free to call them a tool. And if you’re wondering “OMG has Dose of Metal gone soft?” the answer is – obviously yes, because I just wrote an article about Lady Gaga. And I’m still more metal than you. Fuck off.
The moral of this story: I have no clue. I just dislike her music, and find her theatrics incredibly annoying. But of course if we were at a show together, I’d treat her the same way I treat every other human being, metalhead or not: if they’re female, think about what their boobs look like, if they’re male, wonder if their dick is bigger than mine. Lady Gaga’s in the second group.
Devildriver kick ass!
Devildriver kick ass! Not only have they been producing ass kicking music for the best part of a decade now, but now I can stare at beautiful ass kicking Devildriver branded asses whilst listening to Devildriver branded ass kicking music, thanks to the above photo. How can life get any sweeter than this? Well ok, maybe if I had a girlfriend so I wouldn’t get so excited by the sight of the slightest bit of flesh 🙁 It would save me a ton on tissues too…
Click play below for a surprise Devildriver anthem. Go on, guess what it’s going to be…
Overrated? Hell no!
Ever get sick of that one friend who claims he’s the biggest fan of a band, yet his favorite song is the band’s biggest and most well known hit? That song is soooo overrated right? Actually no, it’s not in some cases. Today’s random rant from myself, is about three of the greatest songs of all time (in my opinion), that make all the clichéd lists and fans of the band’s sometimes look down upon. Look the songs are well renowned for a reason…

Atheist vs. Death?
So, I just woke up and read a couple of news posts on Blabbermouth and then I saw the headline “ATHEIST Frontman: CHUCK SCHULDINER Did Not Create Technical Metal“. Now, that sounds kind of interesting, doesn’t it?
So, I read the article which features an interview with Atheist singer Kelly Shaefer and he talks pretty respectfully about Chuck Shuldiner and Death. He does include the line that Schuldiner didn’t create Technical Metal, sure, but I felt like the headline of the article was pretty misleading. Just read the most important part of the interview yourself:
“Everybody has a branch on the tree, and Chuck was definitely a thicker branch on the tree, a very important part of what we all do. We owe him a great deal of gratitude for being the pioneer that he was. I have a lot of respect for what he’s done and accomplished. But truth and matter of fact is that technical metal was not created by Chuck Schuldiner.“
So to me it seems like Blabbermouth took that last line out of context to create a headline that makes people want to read the article. Don’t get me wrong, we do that as well at times but we usually set it straight when you start reading the article.
The issue I’m having with this headline is not that it’s putting Atheist in a bad light, which it does, or that it’s trying to set up a feud between two legendary bands, which it does as well. My issue is that Blabbermouth turned Metal news into ordinary gossip and that doesn’t sit well with me.
Maybe I’m just trying too hard to be an elitist here, but I still view metal as something that can make people bond, something absolutely positive. I don’t even remember how often I got into a conversation with people because of the band shirts I’ve been wearing. There’s just something about “Hey, that dude wears a shirt of a band I like as well” that makes people bond. It’s not like everyone around you is a metalhead so it’s cool to meet new ones and I kind of think we should stick together and Blabbermouth is doing the exact opposite of that.
Blabbermouth is trying to create a feud not just between Atheist and Death but also between Atheist fans and Death fans. Personally, I view both bands as almost equally important to the scene so this is no Metallica/Megadeth situation, it’s more like a Judas Priest/Iron Maiden situation, albeit in a much smaller way.
What I’m trying to say is that especially metal sites should try to be better than Perez Hilton and not follow his example. Let’s try to unite metal fans, not divide them.
