Blast from the Past: Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy

There were many that thought by the time this album finally saw the light of day, there would actually be democracy in China. Those people were wrong though, because as we all know, the controversial 14 billion-years-in-the-making album finally did find its way onto shop shelves.

This week for ‘Blast from the Past’ I’m going to take an objective look at Guns N’ Roses latest album, Chinese Democracy, released in 2008. Can I go from reviewing albums from the 1980s, to an album from just 3 years ago, and still call it “blast from the past?” Yes, just watch me do it.

So why Chinese Democracy? Well, it’s a controversial album, we’ve just recently interviewed guitarist Bumblefoot, so why not take an objective look at the album. Is it really Guns N’ Roses, or just an elaborate Axl Rose solo album? Is it good, or is it a little crap? Find out after the jump.

Review: Dia De Los Muertos – Satánico Dramático

I can’t resist free shit, so it was a must get for me when I read that Dia De Los Muertos released their new album ‘Satánico Dramático’ for free on their website.

I’ve heard of the band before and planned to listen to their EP, ‘Day of the Dead,’ but sadly never got my hands on it.

Free or not, is it a good album? Well, check out my review after the jump.

Review: Sylosis – Edge of the Earth

If you’re not too down with the kids, and the modern Metal scene, you may be forgiven for not knowing who Sylosis are. My first awareness of the band, came when I went to see As I Lay Dying. Sylosis were supporting, and although I thought they were fairly good, I did slightly disregard them as another mediocre modern Metalcore-y type band. My initial perceptions were a bit ignorant, as the band actually resemble something closer to Thrash Metal than Metalcore. There are no breakdowns, no continuous alternations between hardcore vocals and clean sung chorus’s. Musically the band are very thrashy, but the vocals are much more aggressive and harsh than those usually used in that form of Metal.

Released about a month ago, Edge of the Earth is Sylosis‘ second album. I was impressed with their new single, and now it’s time for me to review the album. Will it prove to be a modern classic, or just another mediocre attempt and re-energizing the Thrash genre, with a generic modern twist? Find out after the jump.

Blast from the Past: Black Sabbath – Heaven and Hell

Towards the end of the 1970s, Black Sabbath were in a real turmoil. The band had been falling apart for years, with addiction consuming Ozzy and the band, and as a result of the band’s problems, the quality of the music was dramatically taking a dive. After the release of 1978’s poorly received Never Say Die, as stated by Iommi, ironically the band were actually dying. Ozzy was fired and everyone assumed the band would end.

As we all know though, the band didn’t end, and instead, with the help of Ronnie James Dio, they went on to release a new album, known as Heaven and Hell. I’m here to take an objective and honest hard look at the album and deliver to you a review on the 1980 album. How does it compare to the Ozzy albums? Read my review after the jump.

Review: Debauchery – Germany’s Next Death Metal

Remember last week, when I reviewed the Six Feet Under concert I went to, that also included Debauchery on the lineup? On that very day, I also bought Debauchery’s new album ‘Germany’s Next Death Metal.’ I just didn’t get around to review it yet but today’s the day!

For those of you who aren’t yet familiar with Debauchery, I wrote an in-depth Incoming article about Debauchery, including sound examples of each album, in February.

We also interviewed the band’s mainman Thomas Gurrath twice for the site, so I think it’s fairly obvious that I’m really into this band. Make the jump to read what I make of their new album.
