Review: Thinning The Herd – Oceans Rise
You know what I like the most about writing for Dose of Metal? I get tons of music for free, and legally too. Most of the bands I’m covering for reviews, I didn’t even know of before. In some cases, as with The Cleansing, Die, Reckless Manslaughter, Nephrolith, Colonel Blast and more, I’m really happy to be in a place where those bands — or people who do promotion for those bands — want me to write about their music. Simply because I also really, really enjoy that music.
In some other cases — and I’m not going to name bands now — I’d rather not write about them. I like to make fun of a band here and there but I really don’t enjoy bashing unknown bands, even if they do deserve it. But sometimes I just can’t help myself, like it happened in the Spotlight (R.I.P.) collumn a bunch of times.
You might just now be wondering why the hell I’m rambling so much. Well, it’s simple. I’ve never heard anything by Thinning The Herd before, and I don’t know anything about these three dudes either. I’d like to listen to their album, Oceans Rise, with a fresh and clean mind. I honestly don’t know what I’m getting into with this band, but I would like to find out if they’re going to end up in a section with the bands mentioned in the first paragraph or with the bands not mentioned in the second paragraph. ‘Opposite world’ news also came in
Imagine a parallel universe where everything is the opposite of this one. In that one, I’d make fun of a new Napalm Death album, and I’d get excited over a new Korn one. I’d also have a gigantic penis. Well, since it’s the “opposite of opposite,” or I guess the NORMAL world I live in, here’s something to annoy me (and you): Korn just announced this on their Twitter:
Recording on the road 3 songs left then it’s done!
Since they also attached an image of a microphone to the tweet, my guess is it’s Jonathan who just needs to record the vocals, because I presume the instrumentals have been sitting on his MacBook for the past few months. In case you’re not aware, after jumping on the dubstep bandwagon, the band released Get Up, and the plans for a dubstep EP to come shortly after since turned into plans for a full album. Despite my fears of what an album combining an electronic genre that’s not a genre, with a metal genre that’s not metal might sound like, I’m a fan of the song, because it (be as it may) still sounds better than anything they’ve released in years. Which tells plenty about this band.
Napalm Death have some news
The sweetest news of them all — the new album is done! Well, at least according to Shane Embury, and the recent interview he did with Decibel Magazine. And he should know. Read the whole thing for details, but here are the most important ones:
- Everything’s done, including Barney’s vocals
- 19 songs have been recorded, a few will probably be cut from the regular release
- Song titles like Quarantine, The Wolf I Feed, Collision Course, Fall on Their Swords…
- Album title hasn’t been decided on yet
- They’re aiming for an October/November release date, though it might be pushed to next year
All I can say is — November can’t come quicker. Unless they really push it back to 2012. Then November is going to fucking suck.

Friday Top 10: Biggest concert riots
Keeping up with our theme for the week, we’re covering all things riots and looting. Luckily, we have a first hand look at the situation via Mark, who’s been doing some serious investigative journalism, which will hopefully bring us a Pulitzer, the ultimate goal of the people involved in this website.
Now, while Mark is busy on the frontlines fighting looters and making viral videos out of it (get ready for the premiere next week when we make a Top 10: Metal objects to crack skulls with), I took inspiration from the Tuesday Trivia I made this week to extend the subject matter into a Top 10. Get ready for Top 10 rock and metal concert riot moments we’re glad we were too young or too broke to go to.
