Mike Shinoda is scoring movies now…

Mike Shinoda (Macbook user from the thrash metal band Linkin Park) is scoring movies now. The good news is, the movie looks like shit so you won’t have to sit through it and hear Mike’s awful score. The bad news is, I’m writing yet another post on someone from nu-metal.

But first, let’s laugh. Here’s Mike describing Linkin Park‘s sound:

Although we have our moments where we want to play something that’s just brutally loud and Chester’s screaming his brains out, we’re the same band that’s going to write ‘My December’ or sing something softer. Both come naturally to us, and we love to do both. Some people get turned off by one or the other, and we’re okay with that. It’s kind of unapologetic in that sense

Get it? Next time you hear those fast riffs and blistering guitar solos, just remember they have a soft side, too. Now onto the movie:

When they first contacted me about this movie, they cited a few things that I do like Fort Minor and the remixes. I knew they wanted to do stuff I like to make for fun. When I talked to Gareth Evans [Director] about it, I said, ‘For this movie, I really want to do something that’s fun for me. I don’t do film scores, but I want to get into them more. I’m interested in them. I want to go a little bit more traditional.’ He loved what I wanted to do. Some of that required creating musical themes that represented different characters and creating sonic things that represented certain characters.

He loved what you wanted to do? Guy must have awesome tastes in music… Anyway,

The main bad guy in the movie, Tama, doesn’t have a theme. He’s got a sound. It’s this one weird distorted sample that echoes out. That’s all you need. You get that in a moment, and you know it’s him. We tried to play back and forth with those elements because, in our minds, they had to really represent the characters we were portraying.

That’s so groundbreaking and original. I think Hans Zimmer got a time machine in 2008, came to the present day to steal that idea from Mike, then went back to 2008 and used it in The Dark Knight. You go Mike!

What’s with all these mediocre musicians scoring movies now? First Trent Hacknor, now this guy. Next thing you know, Jonathan Davis will get in on this.

Guns N’ Roses got turned down by Reading/Leeds

Last time Axl Rose and his GNR tribute band played the two festivals, he got on stage late and pissed off a lot of fans. Because they were late and had their lineup cut short, Axl just took it out on the promoters. Well, surprise surprise, they will not book GNR again…

I’m just gonna paste something from Blabbermouth, cause why wouldn’t I?

Melvin Benn, chief executive of organizers Festival Republic, who had previously said that he would definitely book the band again, told NME.com that he would not invite GUNS again in the band’s current incarnation.

“I wouldn’t have the current lineup, certainly not at the moment. It doesn’t feel right,” he said.

When asked if he’d consider booking the band’s original lineup, Benn replied, “Of course, if it was the original lineup, I would definitely consider it and if they could tell the time, it would be fantastic. With the original lineup, it would be something very special. We’d have to give them all a watch each, but we’d certainly try to get them if they reformed.

Come on, Melvin. Who doesn’t want his festivals delayed by at least an hour and then cut short because of the curfew? You should bring these guys back!

James Hetfield’s goatee looks like a comma

Metallica‘s own festival has a pretty shitty lineup, but now things get even crazier. James will host some kind of car/bike show or something.

Watch the video above and find out more about it. I got distracted by the comma hanging from James’ chin. What is that? He looks like a villain from Wild Wild West.

Clown thinks his band’s live show is a church

Slipknot‘s Clown (the guy who doesn’t do anything in the band) thinks his band’s live show is kind of like a church. I agree, in a ‘we’ll take your money’ sort of way.

I desire the confidence to able to create unheard of visions within my soul and not worry about the risk of society or cultural retaliation. He creates the most horrific, insane, almost heinous at times, sexual, human images of the grotesque. I would never do it for the shock factor only for the exploration of my mind, to somehow make sanity tangible by bordering on the edge. I’m all about making art tangible, taking it from my brain and having you hold it in your hands. That is as close to god as I come. It’s the same thing with my band Slipknot, when we’re on stage, it’s church. It takes two to make church, but we have nine. It’s my religion.

Tom Morello talks about Randy Rhoads

Here are a few things I dislike about Tom Morello:

– His ‘fuck the system’ pseudo-revolutionary rants who got old really fast
– His band’s vocalist being a rapper
– His comments on the UK riots from the safety of his home from overseas
– The short length of his guitar strap
– His hiding behind a ton of effects
– Being so overrated

Now here’s what I do like about him:

– His hats

Anyway, here’s what he had to say about Randy Rhoads:

I was big fan of punk rock and the whole do-it-yourself ethic, so for a guitar player to come along and rekindle the spirit and reset the bar for hard rock guitar players was a pretty big deal. See, I was never a big fan of the whole ‘party-hard-we’re-gonna-rock-harder’ world. I liked music. But I could see myself in Randy, how he was a real student of music.

Except Randy didn’t have to hide behind hundreds of pedals, use a pitch shifter to disguise his noise as ‘guitar soloing,’ and other crap.
