Dan Nelson, what is he up to?

Dan Nelson, the guy in the middle between his former bandmates of Anthrax up there, was the singer for Anthrax for 2 years, toured with them, recorded an album with them and then got kicked out of the band.

Even though his recordings for ‘Worship Music’ will probably never see the light of day, I’ve seen them live in 2009 and Nelson proved that he is a beast on stage. I was looking forward to hearing his work with Anthrax but now, that that’s scrapped, I thought why not check out what he has been up to since his “release” from Anthrax?

Over at MySpace Nelson has a page dedicated to some work he has done since his Anthrax days, with a couple of friends in his garage (Someone’s taking the Neil Turbin road) and according to Wikipedia (reliable sources FTW!) he is the current vocalist/guitarist for Inside Hollow, who-the-fuck-ever that is.

So anyway, even though he won’t be seen (or heard) with Anthrax any time soon again, Dan Nelson is still making music. And that’s a good thing because most of the songs on his MySpace page are pretty good and catchy as hell. Just check it out.

Scott Ian doesn't give a shit about cover songs

Scott Ian of Anthrax, the band that covered approximately two thousand songs, said “Who gives a shit about cover songs? We’re so far away from that.” in a recent interview with the Miami New Times.

Who gives a shit, Ian? Your fans do. ‘Got the Time’, ‘Antisocial’ and ‘Bring the Noise’ are just three of your covers that turned into crowd favorites and made you the band you are today (which isn’t necessarily a good thing because you’re barely a band at all nowadays).

The interview question above referred to the rumors about Anthrax putting covers of Refused‘s ‘New Noise’ and some Alice in Chains song (I guess, I missed that last rumor) on their new album. Anthrax have covered ‘New Noise’ live (Video after the jump) with Dan Nelson on vocals and it turned into a shitfest. Don’t get me wrong. ‘New Noise’ is a great song and Anthrax (once were) a great band but hell… that just didn’t work.

Either way, ‘Worship Music’ will probably be the next ‘Chinese Democracy’ so we still have 11 more years before they release it and before Scott Ian has to worry about which songs to put on the album.

Belladonna liked the taste of success

Current (I think) Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna, who was Anthrax’s 6th, 8th and 10th singer in the overall timeline, liked the view from huge stages at the Big Four tour last summer.

In an interview with About.com Belladonna had the following to say about the tour “It was quite overwhelming and cool as hell to be part of Metallica‘s world.”.

About Anthrax’s upcoming (hehe) album he said “There’s stuff already ready for the picking. We have to tweak stuff and rewrite some lyrics. All the vocals have to be placed in the songs again. I already sang on one song already”, which means “We’ll record my vocals over Nelson’s vocals and once we’re done, I’ll quit and John Bush will record over my vocals”*.

Damned artwork

The Damned Things

I die every time I hear about Anthrax‘s Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano being involved in a supergroup which also consists of one half of Fall Out Boy. That’s just damned sad. But I guess they found some comfort in at least knowing for sure who their singer is. You know, Keith Buckley… I knew this and I  didn’t even have to cross-reference and check it several times, which is a luxury both of these guys don’t have back in Anthrax.  Anyway, was the humor in this post not bad enough for you so far? It’s okay, because it’s time to throw Conan O’Brien in the mix. Since your head will most likely explode if I continue, let me stop with lame joke attempts (we should leave that to Conan himself now that he has a new job) and explain the missing link between the two.

Remember that infamous “I’m with Coco” picture that stormed the internet right after Conan lost his employment? Well, Mike Mitchell, the guy behind it just announced via Twitter that he will, in fact, be in charge of The Damned Things‘ album artwork. So there’s a slight chance that this album will at least be tolerable to look at, if not to listen to.

Continue reading to see the tweets in context.

Want to play just like Anthrax?

Anthrax, despite not quite knowing who their singer is, are undeniably Thrash legends.  So I’m betting a lot of you out there want to learn how to play guitar just like Anthrax right? Well, don’t bother.  Because Guitars are for oldies.  All you need in order to be a rock god these days, is a modern games console and a piece of plastic shit modelled on a guitar with 4 buttons replacing strings and frets.  Simply amazing.

So, if you want to learn how to play just like Anthrax, put down that guitar, put down that bass, that mic and the drum sticks, and pick up Rock Band today.

The Anthrax songs will be made available on September 28 on the Rock Band Music Store for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.
