Paranoid documentary airing this week
Something to mark in your diaries this week for Black Sabbath fans (which lets face it, should be ALL Metal fans). BBC4 (UK) will be airing a documentary on the band’s legendary second album, Paranoid. The programme lasts an hour and is followed by Heavy Metal Britannia, which follows the rise of the genre in Britain from the 60s and 70s.
Here’s a preview on the programme.
Classic Albums: Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Friday 29/10/10, 9pm, BBC4“In their original (And best) lineup, the Sabs were one of those rare bands in which everyone brought something to the party. They toured mercilessly, roadtesting and refining new material, so when it came to making Paranoid, their second album, it was far from difficult. They were so in the zone that when the album’s running time came up short, they wrote and recorded the classic title track in a mere 25 minutes. Trivia like this often sounds like PR bull, but there’s no doubting the plain-speaking members interviewed here. They leave the hyperbole to fans such as Henry Rollins.”

Tony Iommi is writing again
…so the new Black Sabbath album could potentially see the release around the time of their 50th anniversary. But don’t get your hopes up too quickly, because currently only Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler are involved.
Dose of Metal will keep an illegal gambling operation regarding this issue, make a guess, take a bet and if you win, you get a very special prize. Find out what it is after the jump.
Metal Parenting
I believe in beating your kids. There, I said it. Working out is good for you, might as well make an obedient child out of it… Two birds, one stone.
Nightwish believe otherwise, but what do they know? They sing opera for fuck’s sake. Can Pavarotti even have sex, let alone have kids? I know he’s dead now but the question is valid.
Anyways, this “OMG SOOO CUTEEE” type of video is on YouTube of the guy in Nightwish named after a hernia — Marco Hietala — singing “Planet Caravan” to his drummer’s kid. This type of sweetness makes me sick to my stomach, but can’t go wrong with singing Black Sabbath to your infant, so they have my vote should they ever run for president.
Video after the jump, and btw, I have no idea if the chick in the photo above is still in the band or not. I can’t keep track of everybody.
Blast From The Past: Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Black Sabbath is possibly the most influential band ever in Heavy Metal, often cited as creating the best God damn genre of music ever. Although the band have now reached legendary status, the band were often received criticism in their time for their dark sound.
Despite the early critics, Sabbath were undoubtedly ahead of their time, making use of dark lyrical themes and down-tuned guitars, taking the blues inspired rock of the late 60s into much darker and heavier territory.
One of my favourite Black Sabbath albums is easily Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and this is where the band really stepped things up to try and prove that the critics were wrong. Read on after the jump to see my review of the album.
Black & Purple Maiden
Tony Iommi (Guitars, Black Sabbath), Ian Gillan (Vocals, Deep Purple), Nicko McBrain (Drums, Iron Maiden) and Jon Lord (Keyboard, Deep Purple) are going to record a charity song to raise money to rebuild the Armenian Music School.
Iommi and Gillan were already involved in a charity re-recording of Deep Purple’s biggest hit ‘Smoke on the Water’ to raise money for something something* in Armenia in 1989.
* If you really want to know what they raised money for, read the Blabbermouth article.
My thoughts: Deep Purple are still doing music? And Nicko McBrain still has a weird shaped nose.
