Here’s something that totally justifies Lulu
Lou Reed and Metallica have tapped (payed huge amount of money to) Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) to direct a video for Iced Honey.
Wow, holy shit you guys… Everything’s so great again! We totally don’t mind Lulu now.
Seriously though, if anything, his style of directing can only enhance the whatever atmosphere the track has. Which I’m afraid isn’t a good thing. To be honest, I still have to listen to the whole album, but if The View’s anything to go by, then all my joking around is totally justified. Speaking of “justified” I’m off to listen to some real music now.
The Metallica contest no one wants to win
400 unlucky Metallica fans will attend a performance from Lou Reed and Metallica for some radio station in Germany.
Germany gave us a lot of good music, but they also gave us Tokio Hotel, and let’s not forget David Hasselhoff’s music is popular there (so is Limp Bizkit’s), so let’s take their events with a grain of salt.
Anyway, yeah, people will be able to enter a contest to win tickets to the event, but who really wants to, anyway? We can all go to our local nursing homes with a few Metallica instrumentals, and we’re likely to get better music than Lulu.
The concert will be broadcast on 1LIVE and Metallica.de, and after it’s done airing, the recording will be available on LouReedMetallica.com. In other words, you have three sites you have to avoid.
I will do you a huge favor and will not give more details on the gig. You’re welcome.
No dose of Lulu for you-hoo
Hot off the news that barely anyone gives a crap about Lulu (or rather, only 12-15,000 people care to buy it – an all time low for Metallica), it got me wondering: Dose of Metal is perhaps one of the only metal sites that has yet to review the album. And remember, Metallica take the top spot of being the band we have talked about the most.
So, why? Are we just lazy? Personally, I’d like to say no (well I am, but the other staff aren’t). Whilst I don’t wish to speak on behalf of the other writers of DoM, I know that I simply do not care about the album and I’m certainly not the only one on the site. I haven’t heard the album and I doubt I ever will. Interestingly, looking at the figures, it seems I am not alone. Presuming these statistics are accurate (and remember these are just estimations based on first day sales) then this really is an all time low for Metallica.
So what’s next for the band? People are hoping this will give them the kick up the ass to go back to their “roots”. I doubt it will though. Even now, many of the band members are calling it their finest work, as if someone has wiped Master of Puppets from their minds. Further down the line, expect lots of interviews with Lars explaining that the fans and critics “just don’t get it” and that it’s “a piece of art that must be experienced in the right mindset”. I mean, these guys have made enough money in their time, have enough awards, and have played enough sold out shows to believe they truly can do what the hell they want. And, of course, they can. But the first time, I can safely say, don’t expect the fans to be there.
Finally, can you expect a review of Lulu from DoM anytime soon? I wouldn’t like to say. I heard 30 seconds though and based on what I experienced, I award the album 5/1000. I may not have heard the album in its entirety, and I may never find out if I am a table, but that’s a risk I am willing to take.
Metallica would suffocate with just metal, says Ulrich
For those of you still hoping that Metallica will one day snap out of it, and actually return to their thrash roots, here’s a little Lars quote for you:
“People would like us not to stray beyond certain boundaries. That would kill Metallica. We feed on freedom. We love coming back to metal, but we need to turn over rocks or we’d suffocate. That’s our DNA.”
Look, there’s nothing wrong with ‘straying beyond boundaries’ for a band. We understand, you’re musicians, it’s your band, you have the right to go softer or do weird collaborations with the elderly citizens.
Problem is, you never actually ‘come back to metal.’ You really don’t, unless you count the live shows where, indeed, you do play mostly the classic songs. No one would have cared about the Load/ReLoad albums if they were just a phase, followed by AJFA (or at least Black Album) part deux.
But it never happened, once you strayed, you were gone, and that’s what upsets the fans. Again, I understand the concept of ‘my band, my rules.’ Start playing pop music if you want, it’s your right. But if you’re wondering why fans are upset and the metal community angry, this is why.
You’ve seen the positive comments on Death Magnetic. Go all the way next time, and everyone will forgive you for Lulu.

Metallica employee loves his job
Tracy Calderon is a video technician for Metallica, and apparently he joined the crew when he was 25 — he’s now in his 50s, and still working for the band.
He’s describing his job as ‘the best in the world.’ I’ll say, he probably banged a lot of fat groupies in the early 90s.
Watch the interview above, and realize your sex life sucks compared to the amount of poon rock stars and roadies had.
